Borrowed Time

On dialysis for kidney failure Dad began to grow tired and question weather his reduced quality life was worth fighting for. We made a deal that he wouldn't give up until he had met his grandson (Jess was pregnant at the time). In January of 2006, during a dialysis treatment, a malfunction caused Dad's red blood cells to rupture. The prognosis was bleak - Dad was not expected to survive the night. If by some miracle Dad did survive he was predicted to have extensive brain damage. Through the fog of a coma I reminded him of our deal - he couldn't die until he met his grandson. Against all odds, Dad survived what we later learned no one else ever had. After an ardious rehab with many setbacks Dad rallied to meet his Grandson Isaiah on his 80th birthday. After Dad's experience with Dialysis he swore he would never again be hooked up to one of "those machines". The doctors informed him that he without dialysis within a couple weeks the toxins in his blood would reach deadly levels but he would not budge. Six years later Dad traveled to Colorado for his final trip to spend time with his 3 Grand babies and celebrate his 86th birthday. He still had not been hooked up to one of "those machines" and defied all medical understanding. During his visit Dad took a turn for the worse. Dad's last breath was at Collier Hospice, a fantastic facility staffed with some of the greatest humans I have ever encountered. Other families would comment that it was nice to hear the sound of children and laughter coming from room 212. During Dad's transition he was comfortable and surrounded by people who loved him. Dad chose to be a medical donor. Hopefully his gift will help medical professionals to become better at what they do and prevent the types of mistake that happened to Dad. I'd like to think that they could find what made him so tough and recreate it for the rest of us, but those who knew him know that was just Dads indominable spirit and they'll never be another like him.
